Safe Schools, Healthy Schools
The Safe Schools, Healthy Students grant is a collaboration between the U.S Department of Education, U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Health & Human Services representing the four school districts throughout the Santa Maria Valley including Santa Maria Joint Union High, Santa Maria Bo-nita, Orcutt and Guadalupe Schools.
The overall goal of this initiative is to create a comprehensive valley-wide safety system, to strengthen and expand existing community partnerships, and to link to a broader range of community resources. Now in its second year, the Safe Schools, Healthy Students Initiative is moving forward to provide a safe school envi-ronment for all students, preventing violence and substance use, providing access to mental health services in the schools and early childhood psychosocial and emotional development programs, and supporting and connecting schools and the community.
Safety
A crisis plan is being developed through a valley-wide advisory committee to align schools, the city, county, fire and police departments, and the North Santa Barbara County Public Health Department. The curriculum based PREPARE training will be provided for those involved in school crisis prevention and response.
Prevention
The Prevention Component focuses on reducing sub-stance abuse by providing curriculum based educational material to community youth. The Too Good For Drugs presentations provide information on the dangers and risks associated with substance abuse and are currently implemented at the four school districts. The Alcohol prevention program Class Action focuses on providing civil negligence case scenarios related to underage drink-ing for students to act out in a mock trial.
Mental Health
Multidimensional Family Therapy (MDFT) is recog-nized as one of the most promising interventions for ado-lescent drug abuse in a new generation of comprehensive counseling services. These counseling services focus on issues that impact school performance.
Early Childhood
The Child Assistance Team Creating Hope (CATCH) Program. This county-wide program takes referrals for any “at risk” child exhibiting behavioral challenges. Ser-vices include direct support to the child, support for all the children in the school and teacher and parent consul-tation.
The Kindergarten Student Entrance Profile (KSEP). Is a rubric-based assessment for screening school readiness for Kindergarten students within the Santa Maria Bonita School District.
